Mesa was founded in January 1878 by Mormon pioneers.
Mesa is the third largest city in Arizona, behind Phoenix and Tucson. Mesa is ranked the 38th largest city in the United States. Mesa is the most populous suburban city in the United States. As of June 2007 Mesa had a population 460,155 and growing.
The Hohokam people settled here sometime between 300 and 1 AD. They build a complex irrigation system with hundreds miles of canals, making the land suitable for farming. They left the area around 1400, most likely due to a drought. This gave them their name – Ho-Ho-Kam, “the people who have gone.”
Mesa is home to the new Mesa Arts Center, consisting of Performing Arts, Mesa Contemporary Arts and Art Studio. Also in the downtown area are hand crafted sculptures known as the Sculptures in the Street. Mesa is also noted for having the spring training camp of the Chicago Cubs as well as 11 other teams in the Phoenix or Tuscon area.

Thanks to a diversity of income sources and widespread growth, the metropolitan Phoenix area saw 25,000 new jobs between 1999 and 2000 alone.
